Race Recap: 2019 ROK Sonoma Presented by Sanzaru Completes Round Five
Reverse Pro layout provided a challenge for ROK Drivers
August 5,, 2019 - It was the fifth round of the ROK Sonoma Presented by Sanzaru this past weekend at the Simraceway Performance Karting Center at Sonoma Raceway and competitors were once again greeted by the chamber of commerce weather. With a packed paddock area, a reverse pro track direction and layout and drivers itching to find their way to the top step of the podium, the competition was fierce around the .91-mile facility.
80 Masters & 125 Limited - Feature Race
|Roger Cornwall||Steven Piggott|
Roger Cornwall won the 80cc Masters class as he turned his pole position qualifying run into a win later that day skipping away from Allen Miller to take the top spot by just over half a second. Tom Nelson secured the third position on track with Bob Bigiogni and Kassy Kidd coming home fourth and fifth. Steven Piggott took the top honors in the 125cc Shifter Limited class taking the top step of the podium and the fastest lap of the race. Dee Baldwin finished in the second position as Richard Hilleman secured P3.
Ryan Martin looked to be the driver to beat in the ROK Senior class as his pole position run in the morning turned into a pair of heat race results and inside front row starting spot for the main event. Aiming for the clean sweep of the day, Martin only completed seven laps of the 18 laps main event opening the door for Dakota White to garner the race win. Tavish McGrain and Sandler Hoffman had solid days finishing on the second and third steps of the podium while Rithik Renadive and Arul Venkatesh rounded out the top five.
Master ROK & Junior ROK
|Eric Molinatti||Jakob Paepke|
In the ROK Masters class, it was once again Eric Molinatti that stole the show as he converted his pole position into another race win in Sonoma. Dominating the main event, Molinatti took the victory by more than 16 seconds over David Palic as he out dueled Rene Bine for the second position. John Riedinger solidified a top-five result in the fourth position while Andrew Wait rounded out the top five.
It was the tale of two Jacob's in the ROK Junior class as Jakob Paepke outlasted Jacob Franks in an epic two kart battle for the win. Separated by only a few kart lengths for the entire main event, Paepke got the better of the two taking the top step of the podium by a mere .109.
Master ROK Shifter
Kevin Woods led the twelve karts strong Masters ROK Shifter class in qualifying, but a DNF late in the final took him out of contention for the win. Picking up the pieces was Neil Joseph as he took the victory of Jim Inglebright by 3.892. Nick George was the best of the rest in P3 while Ryan Yop garnered the fourth position. Jim Kidd rounded out the top five while Woods secured the fastest lap of the race but came two circuits short of completing the full race distance.
Senior ROK Shifter
It was a clean sweep for veteran Karter Ron White in the Senior ROK Shifter class as he scored the pole position, two heat race wins and main event victory. As one of karting's best gearbox drivers, White put on a clinic at Sonoma and topped his perfect weekend off with the fastest lap of the race. Brian Keck was the best of the rest in P2 with Worawong Komarakul securing the third step on the podium. Enzo Prevost and Zach Pettinicchi were strong all weekend long and battled at the pointy end of the field but were only able to come home fourth and fifth this weekend.
Casey Moyer scored the Vortex Mini ROK pole position but was unable to transfer that into a race win after unavoidable contact with another driver later that day. Rising to the occasion was Adam Freire as he beat Anthony White to the checkered flag by .159. Christian Cameron added a podium result on route to the fastest lap of the race while Alex Rantala crossed the stripe in fourth. Adding another top-five result in 2019, Valen Venatesh claimed the fifth position and will shift his focus to the next event.
